Everyone gets a smile - paulita

This super clásico seems to have arrived as one of the most anticipated ever. But that’s the feeling it irradiates every single time.

La Bombonera gathers the most diverse kind of people. Between many, economical chasms and nationalities separate us. A group of Asian tourists dressed for the occasion in ‘azul y oro’ (blue and gold) stand out. The game has not started but already they show big smiles. Their incessant, indecipherable, murmur is frowned upon. My prejudice tells me they can’t possibly get it. I’m proved wrong when they stand up and flap their hands in tune with La Doce when it’s time to remember hoaspitalised Diego.

I guess nobody is immune to this.

I try to not get carried away neither by the alleged condition of River of underdogs nor by the near departure of Boca’s biggest idol of the last decade: Guillermo Barros Schelotto. I find that anything but easy.

My heart will be accelerated for 95 minutes and there’s no point in trying to fight it.

The first ball goes to Riquelme’s feet and it comes as a balsam: Román is in one of those days. You can tell, one touch is enough. The second ball he touches finishes in the quickest goal in the history of the clásico (50 seconds). Only he can find the unseen alleys to the goal and leave Ledesma in a position to execute River’s goalkeeper, Carrizo (I suggest that you remember that name). The waving terraces slide at the deafening shout of gooooooal, followed by Riqueeeelme Riqueeeeeelme, which will be spontaneously repeated all through the game.

The first 45 minutes are played at the pace that Riquelme settles. And no, it’s not slow. It’s profound, precise and elegant. Not only ball possession, but ten clear possibilities to score that mostly encounter the wall that Carrizo built up in the goal line. River seems to come back to life at the very end of the first half with one chance.

The breaks in Argentina are longer than in other leagues. They last long enough for the pessimist thoughts to arise. Everyone stuffs with whatever food is sold (they all include meat and bread) in order to avoid thinking about the widespread football law which says that the goals that you fail to score are scored against you. Whether if that’s true in itself is of little importance, it’s proved right in facts more often than not.

The second half finds an eroded Boca and an early equalizer from Rosales. He looks up to the sky, conscious of how grateful he and his fellow gallinas should be. River have a few chances to win the game and so do Boca. River don’t attack but wait crouched and counter attack, always a valid tactic, though hardly satisfying for the black palate that River fans parade.

Carrizo miraculously saves with his leg a free kick taken by Riquelme who also puts a remote-controlled ball on Palermo’s head. All the subtlety that his feet lack, lie in his headers. And yet, he misses. I know then that it’s just not going to happen. Not this time.

Passarella saved his head for now. During the previous game, River fans started chanting about him being a bostero. In their mouths, that’s a big offence. So he chose to carry a white and red umbrella when crossing the field in Boca (and we all let him know that we don’t want him here anyway). In the same line, after the game, he provocatively stated ‘I don’t celebrate draws, they do’. And yet his eyes were laughing so loud.

On the way out of la bombonera, the sense of loosing two points more than winning one was unavoidable.

But had we already forgotten what we just saw and how we felt? Riquelme floods our hearts with immense joy only by playing football. Anything can be said about him, but that’s the effect he has on us. Never has he failed us and we might consider ourselves lucky to have witnessed a breed of footballer in danger of extinction.

A constant reminder of the collective nature of the game.

R: ‘It’s my duty to do everything to help Palermo be the top scorer
J: ‘What about scoring yourself?’
R: (shrugging and looking down)‘I’m happier when I assist a teammate’

And those are not just empty words. Most of the celebrations of Boca’s latest goals include a gesture of thankfulness towards its conceiver who smiles in response (yes, Riquelme smiles).

Because on one of those days, he doesn’t randomly pass the ball. He protects it, even with his ankles at the risk of revenge from humiliated defenders, with such determination that we know he simply can’t loose it. Only then he raises his head and clarifies the play.

On one of those days, he treats us a trick or two and we say ‘have you seen what he just did?’ just to make sure it was not our eager imagination.

On one of those days, he defies modern football and proves that speed of mind beats sprinter's legs.

On one of those days, we get to smile and hope that those days never end.

Hey!!

you've gone blue.

paulita said...

pipita

lowe never answered to me, it was his own conscience he was dealing with.

purist

I look good in blue no?

pipita said...

And why are you always in black, Speaky?? Must admit I feel a bit like a "convidado de piedra" here, explain Paulita, but, now that Ive found the pair of you here, I will be intruding regularly, hope you dont mind

Anonymous said...

You kinda look blue.

Now I am jealous.

pipita,

you company is always welcome.

Unlike that urchin offside :)

Speaktruth said...

say what??

pipita said...

No no, I'll let Paulita do the translating. Dont get impatient

Speaktruth said...

paulita

Jason Koumas is the championship player of the year.

I thought you might be interested in this news.

:)

paulita said...

pipita

what kind of 'convidado de piedra' are you? making a gallina out of a purist, calling boris a 'grasa', ordering me translations and questioning my questioning on mr lowe? :))

speaktruth

we are all blues now :)
thanks for the info, you know I have to be up dated about gambetas over the world.

pipita said...

Touché Paulita. You made me laugh......A bit "chanta" on my part, must confess. We have so many expressions to translate to Speaky...Lets wait and see if he gets that curiuous...Now, Re Boris, dont tell me he really does wear a bostero charm???That would be tacky to the extreme

paulita said...

pipita

I was going to say caradura, but chanta works fine :)

not that the yellow wouldn't bring out the honey of his eyes, but boris style is classic, 'football is for hot dogs' he says

now that we've all agreed that speaktruth is a bostero (offside is a little too), you're welcome, as long as you don't try to jinx boquita again.

pipita said...

Hey, hey, steady there Paulita. Okay, I wont attempt to jinx Boca again, but you are jumping too easily into conclusions. Speaky has not yet confessed being a bostero, and as to Offside, he was precisely the one who, in his typical "undercover" chicken style, declared that Offy had always been a gallina...So, stop simplifying things here

pipita said...

Pardon, meant to say that Offy said that Speaktruth had always been a gallina

paulita said...

tell them speaky, make it echo :)))

one day I softly mentioned marcico. offside stepped in 'you said marcico? I know marcico, I love marcico, you said marcico?' he then went back to his corner and tilting his head to one side, releasing a sigh together with a yawn, he said 'maaaarcico'. he sprawled and a dream of blue and gold captured him.

and I have witnesses :)

pipita said...

No no no no, paulita. Your not playing fair here. Offy's admiration with Marcico cannot be translated into automatic bosterismo. For that matter, one could also conclude that he supports either Ferro or Gimnasia, the other teams for which he played in Argentina

Speaktruth said...

Speaktruth is a Bostero!!

There, I have said it :).

Paulita

Can I have some rabbit stew now?

pipita said...

Bloody hell Speaky!!Thats it then, Im not talking to you again...You have given further evidence of Rousseau's maxim: "Men dominate the world, but women dominate men"...Well, on second thoughts, I'll just assume that you were trying to be a true caballero, and shall continue talking to you...

Speaktruth said...

Women dominate thoughts everywhere pipita.

Look at our beautiful game these days.

No more playboys and hardmen.

Cup final day and title celebrations days looks like a "nannies on strike" days :)

offsideintahiti said...

Hey look, I can do blue too! Haven't found a way to do blue and gold yet, but I wouldn't take sides anyway. I have blue shirts, white shirts, red and white shirts, one for each occasion. I intend to come to Argentina one day and see Boca AND River play. Then I'll make up my mind.

Paulita, your wish is my command, so please don't ask for too much in the next few weeks.

paulita said...

'Speaktruth is a Bostero'

that sounds very good :)))
tell me you don't feel better now that you've said it.
I'd need to know if you'd like your shirt to have the 9 (palermo) or the 10 (roman). if you're feeling retro, I can get you an authentic from 1981 (I assume you'd like the 10 of maradona)

on the rabbit stew, it's not being served tonight. sorry. maybe, one of these nights... I'll see what I can do.

offside

do you really intend to come? or do you intend to keep it an intention?
I won't ask for absolutely anything (in the next few DAYS)

pipita said...

Offy
If you ever happen to come over to Argentina, Buenos Aires rather, I can assure you I'll take a week off from work to show you around town, highlight off course being the game at the Monumental. Even get hold of some pakalolo somehow

Anonymous said...

Thanks a lot for the invitation. It's just a dream for the moment but who knows? LANCHILE do flights from Tahiti to Santiago, and from there, it can't be that difficult to get to Buenos Aires. It's a trip I'd dearly love to make, ideally during the austral summer so I can get down to Tierra del fuego as well.

No certainties, except that if it does work out, I will definitely get in touch with the both of you, in the hope that the three of us can then attend a River game and a Boca game TOGETHER. Now, that would be quite an experience!

Anonymous said...

Hola Paulita,

No that was less painful than I thought>

Can I have a No 10 but with Palermo on the back? (I like the irony :)

I am also thinking of dying my hair blue and gold and getting a tatoo

(Can you please send me the la boca's crest or badge, so I can print and take to the tatoo shop :))

And at least now, rabbit stew is back on the menu.

Happy days.

:))

pipita said...

Offy
Your on lad. Im definetly up for that. Dont mind going to la bombonera at all, but maybe Paulita has her reservations about taking a gallina. Mind you, she'll have to endure watching the match at the monumental with los borrachos del tablón...From Tahitti to Tierra del Fuego?? that is a wild trip your planning. Mind you, I think at this precise moment its colder in Buenos Aires. Bosterita, how are you coping with this freezing weather??
Speaktruth
Have you gone insane????Get a grip mate

paulita said...

speaktruth

'Can I have a No 10 but with Palermo on the back?'
no, at boca we don't joke about the 10.

pipita, please let speaktruth be. a tatoo on the heart sounds appropiate :)

I don't know what would be worse, me having to visit that ugly stadium of yours or have you see the idiotic faces I make during boca's games.
I only asked for some lines, I think offside is asking too much.

paulita said...

che purist

are you sad that heinze is leaving you?

pipita said...

"I don't know what would be worse, me having to visit that ugly stadium of yours or have you see the idiotic faces I make during boca's games."

Ugly stadium??Your clearly jealous Paulita. I know, it must be hard to accept that the Rolling Stones prefer to play at River...As for the idiotic faces, I would be even more embarrassed to have you hearing the abuse I shout during the game

Anonymous said...

pipita

you know (and I know you know I know) that offside will fall for the aromas of la boca :)

'la bombonera late'

what kind of abuse do you shout?

pipita said...

Paulita

Well...You wouldnt want to know. Give me a break here, Im not asking you to describe what kind of faces you make......

paulita said...

I only ask because you've said that you never whistled at anybody.

on the faces, if offside comes soon and roman don't go away, it's mostly smiles :)

Hola paulita

(what is che??)

I am having problems with my timing and yesterday was a difficult day.

I am going to south of france for a few days on friday. My timing will be even worse unless I can find net access
(u see I am making plans and thinking of everything:

cancel the daily milk deliveries
Tell paulita etc :))

On Heinz, I think there has always been this talk about him moving, I am not convinced it will happen till it does.

I can see the gum chewer allowing it as he has Evra and silvestre and also richardson who seems a better left back than attacker.

He is also C.Ronaldo's best friend in manchester, so they may keep him for this job :).

The off season of no meaningful football is already feeling very difficult.

On the bright side, there is an article about super pippo in the champions league magazine (printed before the final)

There is also a Marcela piece on Mascherano also in this magazine.

Also in the magazine, it has published very bizzarely what it calls the worlds most powerful players Top 50. (Not physical power, but those that command respect and every other team wants them. Makes interesting reading. I am not sure if Tevez is on this list or Roman??

Although I guess it is a champions league magazine but still....

perhaps Marcela can shed light on this if she reads this. she writes for the mag afterall.

I think I am talking a lot today :)

Anonymous said...

(I guess che is used similarly to hey)

jaja! how toughtful of you.
if you didn't want to see england against brazil you just could've not turn on the tv you know? no need to go away :)

seriously, glad to know you're giving you mind a rest.

'The off season of no meaningful football is already feeling very difficult'
it was you who said it wouldn't be as bad, now I expect, I demand that it gets better :)

is any of that in internet?

Anonymous said...

cool.

I like che :)

My mind seriously needs a rest. I am like the top 2 epl teams at the end of the season. Tired legs (minds) and perhaps my performance is suffering :))

No, none of it on the internet cos I looked on uefa.com cos I wanted to try and cut and paste. but no such luck. Maybe marcela has some inside knowledge on this. The mag is UEFA's official champions league mag afterall.

maybe in the offseason I can spend some time writing it here for you . I find it strange to have a top 50 list like that based on no stats.

Incidentally

Kaka 1st
Ronaldinho 2nd
C. Ronaldo 3rd
S. Gerrard 4th
D. Drogba 5th
W. Rooney 6th
T.Henry 7th
L. Messi 8th
J. Terry 9th
F.Lampard 10th

50 most powerful players in European football (I guess hence no Roman)

Strange piece of journalism.

and no pippo.

Anonymous said...

I just realised I will miss the england game.

u see, I always tell you about my non footballing friends :)

Anonymous said...

your performances are fine, but you might be on the verge of an injury. we can't lose you right now :))

ok I already don't like the list, no beckham in the top 10?

'maybe in the offseason I can spend some time writing it here for you'
yes yes :)

Anonymous said...

In fact I think I have some fine writing ideas for the off season :)

(but I wont say it till I do it. Like you say dont make a to do list :)

The more I look at this list then I realise its really terrible. Not even naming the pundits or coaches who made the selection.

but now its the off season, you will find me reading a lot of this kind of news and features :)

Anonymous said...

yeah yeah, you can do all of zidane's beautiful moves and you'll write many many articles :)))

even if it had names, even if it had stats, the order is still weird.

are you nervous about tomorrow's game (boca - cucuta)?? :)

Anonymous said...

very nervous.

Exactly the kind of side that can come and bite us:))

i feel better though, when i touch the boca tatoo on my heart :)))

Anonymous said...

jajajaj

I'm sleep-laughing!

have to go

(in a low tone)

I'll be back

:)

pipita said...

No I never swear at my team's players, except some rare exceptions. Usually I swear at the ref, and former Boca players...ha ha ha. The ususal stuff as you may well imagine "Andá a la re-puta madre que te parió bostero hijo de re-mil puta" You get the idea
Speaky
Your back!!!!!!!Hey how's your Wednesday football going??Are you playing this evening. I am, but its getting harder every wednesday. Its great once Im actually playing, but during the previous days and with this cold weather we have here now it feels kind of up hill. Its the old age creepin in I suppose

Anonymous said...

Pipita

my football is more mondays these days, but have not played for 2 weeks as have been busy with day job on both previous mondays.

Old age should not dim your appetite. In our Larson years, the thirst should remain undimmed :)

Our futsal is of course indoors and the main concern is the summer heat when it feels like a greenhouse.

Also most of our outdoor games are played in bitter cold with swirling winds which bring tears to your eyes as you watch the ball orbit in the skies. (heh!heh!heh!)

When I retire I intend to go into coaching. As opposed to doing TV work that everyone does these days.

What nostalgia, playing eleven-a-side in the freezing english weather and trying to come to terms with the long ball. Where we play its indoor-outdoor really, because its a giant tin roof that covers at least six of the five-a-side pitches, but with no walls if you see what I mean.

paulita said...

mr purist

there's a waiting line: crespo, tevez, messi, milito...

switzerland (sat 15.30 arg, I think) and next week algeria (in barcelona)

Anonymous said...

pipita

one game we played in this small stadium.

It was cold and very windy and the groudsman despite our express instructions, put on the water sprinkler and the astro turf was wet, making the ball very fast.

It was a nightmare and I played in the Desailly role and had to take care of a Peter Crouch type. It was awful. I just had to keep pushing and jumping into him when we challenged for yet another high ball. Other times I didnt bother and just chased the flick on.

These games drive me crazy but we have little choice :)

It was sooooo cold . awful awful game.

Anonymous said...

ms purist

milito??

dont make me laugh.

The Rabbit is King!!

pipita said...

That must have been a dreadful experience Speaky. What I remember most of the games I played in England were those played in the most intense fog. Recall standing in the middle of the pitch, I used to play midfield back then, looking straight ahead and literally not being able to the opposition goal, and then turning round and not seeing my own goal either, it was most bizarre

Anonymous said...

pipita

you only ever needed to look in the skies.

Cos thats probably where the ball is.:))

now tell me, is your football in BA better in terms of the quality of the players u play with??

probably.

I dream of playing in really good team of passers and gambetas not misille launchers :))

pipita said...

Yeah, there's more of a ball on the ground spirit here. More fancy gambeteadores too, but these sometimes get on my nerves because they end up loosing the ball for not using their brains. I assume that where you play futsal it cant be all long balls either, especially if you can use the wall

Anonymous said...

pipita

No, futsal is in ground level, but the things is that a lot of the players here and not good gambetas and dont use their brain either :)

football is very easy to improve, once the brain understands what to do, but here the natural first skills are not so evident.

I use to play in a team with a columbian who had all the simple skills, so its easy to link with him for simple passing moves, but this is a rare thing.

but we have some good players, powerful with the big shots and they always want to take the shortest quickest route to goal, rather than pass around to create a flow. This just creates a lot of scrambles and congestion. I play as last man in futsal (cos I am good at defending :) so you can see all the congestion ahead :)

pipita said...

See what you mean Speaky. It must be really frustrating then. I get very irritated when the ball is not played sensibly, but must admit that most players here are more aware of the need to build-up the moves as you mention. We sometimes have a colombian playing with us as well. Very tall and extremely skillfull. Reminds me of Freddy Rincon
Hey, think Paulita is beginning to get bored with our anglo-argentine futsal comparisons...

paulita said...

paulita is entertained and thinking the purist should come in the summer together with offside. then you'll have pipita and friends against rest of the world no?

pipita said...

Very good idea paulita. Im sure I can find three non argies to add to the two you mention. In fact I remember talking about arranging this match with Speaky, and I think also Ebren, on a GU blog some months ago. Remember that Speaky, I think you were the one that raised this. We actually have a GU blogger playing with us on Wednedays: an english bloke who lives in Baires called Neil Clack. Maybe his name sounds familiar to you because he often participates in Marclea's blogs. I actually "met" him there, and then we arranged to meet.

pipita said...

Hiya Ebren, great to encounter you in Paulita's tap room ha ha. I was under the impression that you were now involved in major league eleven-a-side football, playing in the likes of the Walker stadium, with no time for scrappy five-a-side games anymore

I play 11-a-side once every two/three months. Play five a side every wednesday (except today, game cancelled thanks to the police - not serious, they just closed the road the centre is on), and seven-a-side most mondays.

Strangely, I am still unfit and crap.

Also guys - this is like 600 posts now and getting a little bit silly. Wanna move on? I can create a new room and even hide in the past so it doesn't go top if you want...

I will watch link in the home office :)

I think we should stay here, the new place as you say is too cold.

or

we can ocassionally visit the new place, to give the impression of use whilst remaining here.

As Ebren alsp confirmed, staying here causes no harm apart from the effort it takes visitors to scroll down the page

I prefer here, hope u do 2?

Independiente goalkeeper??

Never heard of him and I am sure this is not Abondanzieri?? . (on fact I think he plays in spain)

No not heard of him, but if man u are interested then he must be good.

Probably just some forward planning the gum chewer.

oscar ustari went as 3rd goalkeeper to germany in 2006. he's 20 and 'arg national team has in him a goalkeeper for many years' according to almost every goalkeeper that has ever set foot on an argentine pitch (newspapers ask this kind of thing). last year he was brilliant but this has been a pretty bad season for him. some months ago it was said that barcelona wanted him but now they say manU thing is almost done.
not as exciting as nani or anderson but not bad at all.

You just never know Ms Purist.

You never know.

Life on the golden beaches is a strong desire.

Not matched currently with ability to. But that can/will change :)

I dont know anything of this keeper, but if man u are interested, then he must be good :)

Anonymous said...

the purist in the beach office would be good no? :)

strong desires should be satisfied.

I don't know much about goalkeepers but ustari is very good with his feet (I guess it's important especially for big clubs) and has the habit of not giving rebounds (does that make sense in english?)

Anonymous said...

Strong desires must be satisfied indeed.

You description makes perfect sense in any language.

There are so few keepers who are really good with their feet. That why I loved the bald devine one; Fabian Barthez.

He had his moments (rebounds:)) but he was one of the best at distributing the ball once he caught it. He had also a very good attacking effect on the team cos once he caught the ball, the forwards start their run knowing that the ball was coming their way.

Its important for top clubs to have keepers with these qualities.

However top teams also like steady reliable keepers (Cech, Buffon,Kahn) They will not look spectacular or add to the attacking play. Just steady and reliable.

or you get the more flamboyant like (Riccardo, barthez, Casillas) who adds to the attacking play of the team. but also will make more mistakes.

"the purist in the beach office would be good no? :)"

For sure!! :)

Anonymous said...

I wonder if you have french genes.

ustari sure has positive attacking effect but I also meant that offensive teams (more than big ones) can sometimes leave their keepers unprotected so on occassions they need to work a bit as liberos (sweepers?).

ps: boris and I will take the blue and gold wing of your resort, thanks :))

Anonymous said...

Footballing genes? Yes :)

Did la bombonera create the smoke to blind the opposition? :)

Is there a law that says that everygoal must be announced by the commentator in that manner all the time? :)

Is toilet roll cheap in Argentina?

These are questions to ponder on the golden beaches :)

Anonymous said...

jaja those are the best genes

it's not toilet roll! we are not crazy mr purist :)

the other team today complained about the fog, boca's coach said: 'what? they think we rented it?'

surprisingly, that commentator is the least annoying of the 2, the other one sees another game while relating the one you're watching.

Anonymous said...

Renting fog might?? not be a bad idea :))

Do u reckon someone has tried this already in Italy.

sort of dispensing weather for all the clubs. Hence always demoralizing drizzle in Juve's Stadio Della Api for those champions league games :)

So its winter in Argentina?

I really should know more about geography and such like at school.

I was sick that day :)

Anonymous said...

I don't think you could find any use to a geography knowledge of argetina, so don't bother...

about some basics, like knowing when each season start and that it's the opposite in the north and south hemisphere, now that could come up in some conversation. and if someone says somthing like 'you have a football as a head' no, they don't mean it as a compliment.

Heh!Heh!Heh!

Anonymous said...

Staleness is a prime reason why players should move if they can. unless they are in the middle of unparalled success.

But even the Lyon team is effectively breaking up.

Sometimes players and humans alike need new challenges.

Talking of which, my travel commitments are about to increase in the coming weeks and months and not all to golden beaches :(

But technology is portable so should not prove too disruptive to my responsibilities :))

Anonymous said...

'But technology is portable so should not prove too disruptive to my responsibilities'

I think you know what you have to do :)))

---------------------------------

'Sometimes players and humans alike need new challenges.'

(yeah, players are not human :)

henry doesn't find enough of a challenge to play for 1 of the top teams in the world whose fans adore him? what's the expiry date for that?

I don't think that you have to necessarilly keep moving to be challenged but especially not footballers.

I do however have conflicting thoughts about this. maybe cause you're a (true) purist you tend to take the player point of view. but looking trough fans' eyes it's hard to understand that they want to go for the only sake of keep moving (where? for what?).

I know I'll eventually understand that they are employees and behave as such, but for now I celebrate every exception to that rule.

the fog is obviously having strange effects on my humour, you should know about this?

Anonymous said...

che paulita,

I think the fog is doing strange things to your humour.

And you are right, I know all about this :)

I guess the thing is that from a neutral perspective every player has cycle which he inevitably get to the end of.

From Arsenal and Henry's point of view its is the best time for a move. They will never get as much money for him if he doesnt move in the coming season.

If Henry stays, he is going to suffer more frustration with all the current instability and when this happens he never contributes as much to the team.

I forgot that you are an arsenal fan.

There are some tears ahead I fear....

Anonymous said...

Players and humans ..... :)

I have only just noticed this.

:)))

Anonymous said...

what did you just call me??
I've been called many things, but never ever 'arsenal fan'.

I guess if you can ask for more gambetas I can ask for more tottis!!

so it's the fog then?

*'che paulita' sounds funny with your english accent :))

Anonymous said...

This day is getting worse :)

ok.

No more che's

no more Arsenals

I am sure u said u liked them???

How's the winter?

Anonymous said...

no no, I mean funny in a good way, more ches :)

all I said was that I like fabregas and henry (and dislike a.cole). I never said things like wenger is THE football guru or arsenal is the academy of football art...
but I don't dislike them as much as you do.

the winter? 1 week is freezing, the other warm like spring, hail, fog... it gives us plenty of elevator talk :)

how's the summer?

Anonymous said...

Summer has been here for a while

Although its probably less summer since summer started. I refer only to London of course.

elevator talk eh?

Do people go beyond their stop to complete their tales??

I guess I needed to refresh my memories of your "love" for Arsenal :))

They are doomed :)))

Anonymous said...

in buenos aires we are talking about the weather all the time, always too cold, too wet, too hot, too... it saves many embarassing silences though :)

are you watching any of la liga?

a newspaper from madrid says 'messi is already maradona' (handgoal)

don't wish arsenal bad, since I did that with villarreal they started winning :)

Anonymous said...

Its amazing how Argentina has many almost english traits. here its the same but I would have expected latins to be more expressive??

maybe all cultures just talk about weather?

There used to be this ad on TV:

English family at the dinner table. Silence everywwhere until the son ask the dad to pass the salt.

Then the old aunt says; he's not your dad....

everyone stop with a spoon of soup close to their lips etc...

so u see, to avoid these moments, you talk about the weather. I talk about football and the good life. :))

I am not sure I remember what this ad was about, but I remember the dinner table scene :))

I dont really wish arsenal any harm to same extent as......Liverpool.

I just enjoy their misery cos they are just cry babies when it gets tough.

I have no visual as I have technical problems, but I know real are losing barca are drawing courtesy of maramessi and sevilla are drawing too.

This could be the game that could see sevilla come fully into the frame with one game to go.

Anonymous said...

I guess it could be universal.

around here weather is mostly for elevators and taxis.

inside a car on the way to a family meeting. the mother says to her husband 'don't talk about politics, not tonight'. the kids stare at their parents. silence. she adds 'also not about football' (maybe because he's too expressive?). the husband smiling but visibly annoyed 'what do you want me to talk about then?'. the answer 'non controversial things... like weather'.
once in the party the weather subject will last seconds.

this isn't an advert, it's based in a true story :)

((do you see why milito comes in the queue before the rabbit?))

sevilla has just wasted a great opportunity (again)

before I leave, an update from argentine league.

a couple of minutes ago...

chicago stadium, buenos aires
48 min second half
chicago 2 river 1

foul outside the box, penalty for river. chicago's players complain with the double frustration of knowing they are right and that a draw leaves them at a one step distance from relegation.
everyone pushes everyone, coaches assistants jump on the pitch but no punches. the game is stopped for 20 min. chicago's coach first tell their team to leave the field (they don't) and then shouts at the one who's taking the penalty 'miss it or nobody goes out'. he takes the penalty twice (invasion) and scores both of the times.

on one bench, federico higuain (scored the opener for chicago, brother of pipita, dismissed at river by passarella) is sourly crying. on the other bench, passarella himself. his look says 'I've got bigger problems than this, you know?'

isn't southamerican football beautiful? :)

good night mr purist

Anonymous said...

Beautifully Choatic

Good night ms purist.

surely la liga is the title no one wants to win.

Anonymous said...

Hola Paulita,

How are u today?

Hope the winter is not too bad?

Tevez to Man u.

That should make you happy no?

I recall many times on the other blog talking about the need for more south american players in the epl.

At long last someone had listened, although I think Tevez rather than me, opened this door :)

Anonymous said...

chechecheche

why are you not as excited as you were about nani and anderson?

and what's with the godfather splurging like this?

it's summer inside my house. some problem with the heating. boris is wearing a flowery swimsuit and flip flops :)

Anonymous said...

Boris is swimsuit is just too funny to contemplate. reminds me a similarly dressed dog on the golden beaches.

Have not really had time to get excited about Tevez to MU.

I am also concerned cos he is an established star. Might have been better for him to perhaps go to chelsea. but we would be happy all the same.

Can you imagine the attacking options at Man U??

Tevez. Ronaldo, Saha, Rooney, Nani, Anderson

and thats before you get to Giggs and Kieron Richardson :-))

I think there is no need for the other teams to think of the title next season.

Today is a busy day and futsal at the end.

Anonymous said...

this might sound incoherent, but too many too good options might not be that good.

I'm saying this now so we don't have problems in the future: there'll be crosses of salt if SAF leaves carlitos too long on the bench.

:))

ustari scored yesterday

futsal may strain ankles but should be good for the mind no?

Anonymous said...

Too many options is not always the best, but I think SAF will know how to juggle the pieces and Tevez for sure will spend time on the bench whatever salt u cross :)

All said, I am not sure he will end up at ManU anyway.

I thought ustari is a goalkeeper??

Good for the mind for sure, although my energies are lacking right now, but I should be ready closer to kickoff.

Anonymous said...

you still think he's going to chelsea?

ustari is a goalkeeper. his team received 2 penalties, people asked for 'uuustaaaari uuuuustaaaari' on both of them, he took the second one and scored.

'my energies are lacking right now'
you've only just returned from golden beaches, shouldn't your energy provisions be full?

Anonymous said...

Yeah

I am reffering to today and todays issues are sapping my energy levels.

Anonymous said...

have you seen zaragoza's second goal against real madrid??

I was thinking the other day, have I told you that I met the rabbit once?

hope your energy has recovered :)

Anonymous said...

My energies are drained.

My first game in 2 weeks and the venue was hot like a greenhouse.

Good game though :) lots of nice passing and goals.

I have not seen any of the goals and shocked to think that u have met the rabbit and have not told me b4 :(

Without the crowd, the toilet roll :), the skill :)) (ok mayb a little:)

where is my rabbit stew??

Anonymous said...

does your home ground beat? la bombonera does.

about the rabbit stew...
I've been searching for the recipe because I thought there was one in the back of my head. guess what? there isn't, there was, apparently it fell down.

I've tried to come up with a new one. it really doesn't taste good, sorry

'Saviola’s professional debut was at the age of sixteen, at river and under the wing of Ramón Díaz.
From those days, he doesn’t seem to have grown, it is the kits he wears what appears to now fit.' (...)
'the rabbit has long been slipping away, wandering foreign fields he could never claim his own. it's time to go back to the warmth of his warren. the red oblique stripe is waiting.'

you can spit it in your napkin while I look the other way :))

Anonymous said...

Still, any rabbit stew is better than none.

And I like the tale about his kit, it brings a certain warmth to the heart amidst the hussle and bussle.

Maybe in future u need to add carrotts to help with the overall goodness of the stew :)

And now I am full, its time to visit dreamland. I am to last one to board this flight. (in this hemisphere :))

Good night ms paulita.

do u think he will be successful on the madrid bench??

Anonymous said...

barca's fans, who are said to love him, say they don't mind the rabbit going to madrid, what kind of love is that???

I think he should go back to river, I really do, river needs him and maybe he needs to be needed :)

Anonymous said...

Becos they know that no matter how much they love him, the barca coaching people will not give him same love, so its better the rabbit is released into the wild (R.Madrid:)

You cannot make any suggestions about River. You are biased :)

Anonymous said...

1 - that's not love, it's sympathy, but maybe sympathy is love?

2 - I don't think I've ever been this generous and unbiased... of course personally I'd rather see the rabbit warm other european bench, but he's wasting his finest years and that's just a pity. but if he doesn't have a problem with that...

:))

Anonymous said...

Ha!Ha!

I am not sure if your soul is bleeding cos you are watching cattenaccio v effort or at the thought of Roman at those footballing giants Murcia.

Things is, that may exactly the kind of club he ends up at in spain.

he should come to england.

In england, depending on which team he joins, he will slow down their play and reduce their effort by at least 50%.

No more lung bursting runs from box to box by average midfielders. They will just give the ball to roman and he will take charge of all delivery matters

And with his ability at set pieces....Big Sam's Newcastle it is then.

was out in town last night, so was rio. f

Anonymous said...

hola mr truth

roman has already said he's not interested in english football, he watches it but he won't play there.

you met rio f??? that beats meeting the rabbit :)

Anonymous said...

hola ms paulita,

to say met, is an exageration, more like a passing handshake. The one thing that sprung to mind was how huge the difference in our earnings, even if I was better dressed :)

u never really told me the rabbit tale.

Anonymous said...

I didn't really 'meet' him either. it was at a christmas party a couple of years ago. a friend of him knew a friend of mine, they said hello, someone told me 'he's javier saviola' as if I didn't recognize a rabbit in civil clothes :))
I'd have thought he was shorter.
do you know placente? he was also there.

I assume your hair also looks better than rio's?

Anonymous said...

for sure on the hair front.

I know placente, now at celta vigo??

I think of is it getafe??

he is better knowned for his time B.Leverkusson.

footballers are usually very dull to meet with a few exceptions like Chris waddle who was hilarious when I met him and also drunk.

The rabbit in civvy clothes would surely look like a kitchen hand or a chimmney sweep boy :)))

Anonymous said...

we have a saying here that goes 'billetera mata galan', wallet (money) kills (beats) wooer/beau...
ok, I can't translate :)

tell me about chris waddle

you got me thinking, I should think of something clever to say in case I ever meet roman.

Anonymous said...

Chris waddle was kind of the english Kily Gonzales. Maybe with more tricks.

He looked kind of gangly, tall, but had fantastic skills. Can u imagine an english player being worshipped at O.Marseille for his ball skills??

anyway it was one xmas period and I was out in town and he was in this bar with 2 other players.

Cos we were all standing quite close and one of the players was talking with to one of my female friends and waddle was nearest to me to we started talkin and drinking and he said a lot of funny things.

he came originally from newcastle and played in the same side as Peter Beardsley and all the media used to mention their names like ....Ronaldo and Rooney.

Anyway in the chat he was just chatting about how he hated beardsley etc and then spent a long time telling me how great his newly released football video is etc. Just drunk and funny

It turns out they had a game the next day and they were fined heavily cos someone took pics of them drunk and sent it to press.

Waddle existed at a time when english players had some confidence to be big players. and for england it waddle and barnes and they were full of tricks so it was easy to watch the team then.

Anonymous said...

dont think I could ever find anything remotely clever to say if I meet ZZ.

Or indeed the capacity to utter any word may elude me completely :))

Anonymous said...

I guess christmas is the time when footballers go out, though in england there are always stories about drunken footballers no? I don't know if footballers here don't drink as much or are just well covered.

I've just seen a youtube, he really looked like he was having fun while playing, so there was a time when there were more like him?

I could be wrong, I read or heard somewhere... is this waddle the one that after the world cup said something like you just have to accept that england isn't one of the best sides? something harsh but resigned?

ja! I can't come up with anything either...

Anonymous said...

The player you are refering to that resigned was Hoddle. He was also a very skillful player, but unfortunately for him, then england coaches preferred players like....."Gattusso" than "Pirlo".

He played with waddle in one season for spurs. The lone striker scored 49 goals in that season.

English players always had the habit of drinking a lot. cos they had a lot of money and free time and little education. Bryan Robson england captain was the biggest organiser and famous for drinking and playing at same time.
Tony Adams...there are loads. Even J. Pennant fainted on a flight back from hols in spain due to dyhydration due to......

Its in the culture of the sport here, which is why the likes of wenger is very suspicious of english players.

SAF had an army of informers to tell him when someone was spending too much time in bars etc.

Anonymous said...

I forgot to ask.

do u have a little boris?

Anonymous said...

yes yes hoddle! england coach in 1998. I was close... if only they had memorable names... like 'speaktruth' :))

I once heard veron talking about that. he said that english footballers can drink a lot, as we say, 'even the water from vases of flowers' and run the following day as nothing had happenned. he concluded that you must have a special physique.

little boris and little biancas. not yet but soon.

Hola ms purist

I cant say I am happy either.

And my technology is very fragile.

Sir David has enough to be happy about, without me. Perhaps he will be happier when they make him king David.

I saw some news of Boca....

I have in my world soccer mag an interview with Carlitos

I thought if I have time I will write out the whole interview for u.

but this is a busy hot day :)

Anonymous said...

you're not happy? don't you enjoy this trips?

what news from boca?

I read today that manU is interested in carrizo (river's goalkeeper) and juventus in lovely roman :)

stop saying you're going to write on this and that... just do it :))

Anonymous said...

For sure I dont enjoy business trips. I have done quite a lot and its tiring. But on this occassion I am happy with it.

ok I will stop saying I will do this. but I did think I would if I had some spare time, but I have not had spare time to write the whole interview.Yet.

How is my little Boris?

Anonymous said...

I thought Man u were interested in the Independiente keeper??

Anonymous said...

what's special about this one?

your little boris was conceived yesterday :))

'I thought Man u were interested in the Independiente keeper??'
I'm only the meesenger, that's what they're saying here.
but SAF must be looking for a keeper no?

Anonymous said...

what special about which one??

The Carlitos interview??

It had a lot of interesting comments about his arrival in england.

SAF is looking for a keeper cos, the 3rd keeper, I cant remember his name, played for watford last season, is injured for next season and Van der sar is nearing his 90's

so only the polish keeper is left.

little Boris is ready!!!

have u decided which one u will send me??

Anonymous said...

special about this trip.

carlitos has angered gilberto, have you heard that?

'have u decided which one u will send me??'
I' ll know which is the right one for you when I see him (or her? do you want a boris or a bianca?)

Anonymous said...

I think I prefer a Boris :)

Like me :)

Does little boris have a dad?

and is it a a boxer??

Just that I thought it would be difficult for a Boris to find a Bianca??

Nothing special, but for me it was better to be out of London for these days of Hamilton, Beckham and all the hype.

which gilberto??
the arsenal one??

Anonymous said...

this is a family of beautiful boxers. bianca is not as pretty, but they'd met when they were 6 months or so. they get along :)

that's the only gilberto I know. carlitos said something about brazilians not wanting to go to the national team. gilberto said he would consider the critique if it came from messi or riquelme, not from tevez, 'he had a bad start at the PL, now he talks'

Anonymous said...

So u have a Boris and a Bianca?

I didnt know this.

Have u checked with DHL to see if they deliver??

Hence in the interview Carlitos is talking about the shock of arriving in england and how he felt lost sitting on the bench and how he is grateful cos the west ham fans cheered him and JM. And how he was sad when JM left for Liverpool, but was pleased he did cos he was very unhappy at west ham. etc etc etc

Its normal anyway for the Brazillians and the Argentinians to be exchanging bad words.Non?

Anonymous said...

nono, bianca isn't mine.

so I have to give you the puppy and figure how to send it. really not my intentiong to bother you, but what's your part here exactly? other than sit and wait? :))

they don't often exchange bad words... they're usually saying how they respect each other. that's at national teams level. between clubs it can sometimes be different.

Anonymous said...

Sitting and waiting is not an easy task you know???

:)

Anonymous said...

mr purist

I trust you'll do a better job than I've done with boris. buenos aires was very noisy last night, do you think he bothered to at least open his eyes when boca scored? no, he didn't. do you think he tried not to brake many things when he was left alone during the day? no, he didn't.

I have a theory about people who don't like riquelme, it's very simple, a little offensive and not completely proven scientifically but the estimated margin of error is small (more appropiate to this place rather than the other):
'people who don't like riquelme's football are very bitter people'
I'm not sure it applies to other hemispheres but I'm going to research.

Anonymous said...

Poor Boris,

Maybe he has just seen too much success, he needs to rest.

On Roman

You have to understand that here is UK judgements of certain players or sportspeople are very entrenched

for instance, they all dislike super pippo, but he scores lot of goals, but cos they may dislike his style, so they disregard him as a striker, when in reality he is one of the best at the job.

Compare this perception of him to .....Van Nistelrooy. There are people here who will tell you even today that SAF made a mistake to sell him.

You see what little Roman knowledge there was, was clouded by:

The world cup (Inaccurate assesment)
but mainly the penalty miss v Arsenal where the commentators says....Roman has "bottled" it. Meaning he has lost his nerve.
Retiring from Int football
leaving Europe

There also the fact that his time at Barca was not so glowing.

There was then a lot of effort from people who knew him when he was at Boca to explain his style.

And of course they are suspicous of any player who can not run around a lot.

He reminds me of Valeron (Deportivo and Spain)

do your research but u r not going to change this perception easily.

I mean, some UK F1 fans find a way not to recognise that schumacher was a great racing driver.

This blindness is acute.

don't worry, I'm not trying to change anybody's mind.

it's alright not to like his football, people who like him feel instantaneously happy when he touches the ball, I guess that is very subjective. but saying he didn't make it at barceklona when he was there for less than a year, not played much and when he did was out of his position... or that he didn't win anything at villarreal... it shouldn't but that makes me nervous.

enjoy every touch of the ball and almost sad when he passes it simple (which he did a lot)

when I come to BA, I will bring the video for Real v Man u. :)
