Chanelle, Titi and la règle hors-jeu

Regular readers of Pseuds will remember our young friend Chanelle. She has been chatting again to Zephirine.

“OMG Thierry’s leaving, Alicia and I were like speechless. Well not for long lol. But it’s like end of a thing yeah, whatsit, era. I used to love him sooo much like I had pictures of him all over my room and even though I’m older now it’s like he belongs to us what is he doing going away??? Well of course making about four million squid a year and hoping to win big shiny trophies is what he’s doing but all the same. You see this is why I used to say to Karl the football anorak, yeah, I was like don’t care so much about it Karl cos football will break your heart yeah and here is the proof.

“Cos this is my theory right, that apart from having too much importance in the universe yeah, football is like it says in poetry a cruel mistress. All these blokes are so in love with their team yeah and they give it all this loyalty and stuff and does it care? And like mathematically yeah most football fans are guaranteed to be miserable most of the time right cos only a few teams win everything and everybody else like suffers. So they’re like pouring all this emotion down the drain really, but as Alicia says yeah if they didn’t have football men would never speak to each other at all right so I suppose then the world would like grind to a halt.

“Anyway we were down the pub yeah with Alicia’s boyfriend Gavin and some French bloke he’s picked up with. Now you might remember Gavin is Mr Knows About Sport yeah, on account of that’s all they did at the Academy of Snot or whatever his posh school was called. And the frog guy seemed to be like pretty much the same. And they were arguing about some offside decision or other and like ignoring us.

“Now there is a thing where Alicia and me disagree right, which is this. Alicia’s really smart yeah, all her family’s the same they can put two and two together make five and sell it back to you for seven if you know what I mean. But when there’s blokes about she just like puts her brain away in her bag for later yeah. And I don’t see the point of that right cos who wants to be around a bloke who thinks you’re stupid? Well, her obviously lol. So when I tried to join in the conversation she kicked me a bit yeah but I carried on and then the frog guy was like “Ah, so you understand ze offside rule Chanelle?” in a really patronising voice and I’m like “Yeah”. Cos what’s so difficult yeah, Karl explained it to me, if you’re like involved in any serious action you’ve got to have more than two of the other blokes between you and the goal so like is that like complex?

“So I said what is the French for offside anyway and he said what sounded like Roger. So I thought typical frog yeah they can’t even think up their own words for stuff but as Alicia said later yeah cos she likes the French cos they had a house there she said yeah but we use their words like boutique and crème caramel so I had to admit she was right cos a world without boutiques would be a sad place lol.

“When we got back from the pub I was well pissed off with Gav and Froggo treating me like a moron yeah so I called Karl the football anorak and said like “Karl I’m soooo depressed about TH14 leaving yeah can we talk about it?” And he ran round to my place quicker than old Thierry himself so we are again an item and all’s well that, you know, whatever.”

I was out the other day and heard someone say "lol".

I mean. Where do you even begin?

Top stuf once again Miss Z - I dipped my fingertips into cricket earlier today, so I feel it's only fair you are joining in with the footy.

Anonymous said...

OMG! They're back! LOL!!!

Anonymous said...

Hadn't realised how much I'd missed the girls. Brilliant. And honestly, why do they make such a fuss about the offside rule anyway?

guitougoal said...

Chanelle,
offside, hors-jeu, hor-side,offjeu whatever Titi will be in Barcelona ,fuera de juego con fuego or sin fuego...we are an item again.La vie est belle.

You can blame Monsieur Hors-jeu sur Tahiti for this one, he requested Chanelle's views on the matter..

Zeph,
I'll thank him for that.Probably a mojito in Cannes soon will do it.

someone e-mailed me this during the world cup. i knew it would come in handy one day :)

Subject: FW: Girls in preparation for the world cup! THE OFFSIDE RULE

In preparation for the World Cup, the "offside rule" explained for
women:

You're in a shoe shop, second in the queue for the till. Behind the shop
assistant on the till is a pair of shoes which you have seen and which
you must have.

The female shopper in front of you has seen them also and is eyeing them
with desire. Both of you have forgotten your purses.

It would be rude to push in front of the first woman if you had no money
to pay for the shoes.

The shop assistant remains at the till waiting.

Your friend is trying on another pair of shoes at the back of the shop
and sees your dilemma.

She prepares to throw her purse to you.

If she does so, you can catch the purse, then walk round the other
shopper and buy the shoes!

At a pinch she could throw the purse ahead of the other shopper and
"whilst it is in flight" you could nip around the other shopper, catch
the purse and buy the shoes!

BUT, you must always remember that until the purse has "actually been
thrown", it would be plain wrong for you to be in front of the other
shopper and you would be OFFSIDE!

But Marcela: are these really must-have fuck-me shoes? Are the heels covered with glitter mirrors and at least 4 inches high - with satin on the main shoe?

Unknown said...

mimi, they could be brown suede mocasins... it don't really matter :)

the point is, without the offside rule there would be too many goals.

fuck-me shoes rule, undoubtedly, but shopping would be no fun at all if there wasn't something a little bit special about scoring...

Anonymous said...

Great work Zeph, Chanelle roolz.

There are such things as Fuck Me goals - such as

'Fuck me, how did the ref give that, Inzaghi was miles offside?"'

or 'Fuck me, how did Zamora score from there?'

Anonymous said...

I request, she writes.
I even appear as "Froggo", which has a nice lord-of-the-rings ring to it.
They name a rule after me.

After that, how do you expect me not to grow a bit of a melon?

Thanks, Zeph, that was a treat.

Anonymous said...

Offside - your wish, etc. (though Chanelle doesn't seem to have thought much of the froggy guy...)

BD - can't remember which big match it was, but I was walking past one of the Mile End Road pubs when a vital goal was scored, and a girl came rushing out of the pub onto the pavement screaming "Fuck me! Fuck Me! Fuck ME!" An Asian lady passing by was absolutely terrified.

Emma said...

Another great installment of Chanelle, Zeph, very amusing; top, top stuff.

Though she sounds scarily like a girl in my class. The way she talks, her devotion to Thierry, all of it... :S

@ Marcela - best way of learning about the offside rule. ever.

Hey there Emma/Fishcake

How are those exams going?

And when does Pseuds get its first piece from the House of Zummer?

Anonymous said...

Good to know I'm getting it right Emma :)

Hope the exams are going OK.

Anonymous said...

Out of curiosity, does anyone know the origin of the term offside? I'd never given much thought to the etymology but have just decided that fuera/hors make a lot more sense than "off-".

I must confess that it took me ten minutes to understand the shoe shopping analogy. I got all worried that I wouldn't be able to run or leap in order beat the other shopper, because I fall over a lot in fuck-me shoes. Then I realised that I was missing a key point. (These are the thought processes that I really should keep to myself).

Unknown said...

etimology pretty simple.

Created in the mid-19th century in England/Britain (probably by public schoolboys) to describe a player in an illegal position to recieve the ball.

Also the right side of a horse.

The side of a vehicle not near the kerb. and the side you hold your bat in cricket.

Anonymous said...

The 'off' side is the outside, isn't it, and the 'near' side is the inside, presumably offside is outside the inside of the correct playing area (for your side, obviously)?

Munni, don't you know you should always wear trackshoes to go shopping, so you can run and leap over rival shoppers, and if you should happen to kick them there won't be much damage for them to sue you over:)

Anonymous said...

Invented by public schoolboys? Ah, that explains it.

And

Name a band that made a worthwhile comeback album.

Couldnt get one at all.

Come on Pseuds (I'm lookin at chew Brooksie)

BD, you can't come up with this challenging stuff at this time of night... I'm looking WET LOMPRAIL, was that a band?

As for comebacks, no idea. I can think of solo artists but no bands.

Did you win the quiz?

Anonymous said...

Forget bands. Any comeback album will do.

Guitou, went to a MM signing and talk years ago. He was good fun. One of my all time favourite books has an intro by him. It's called Rivethead, and is by a guy called Ben Hamper, who featured in Moore's first film, Roger and Me. It is a superb book about life on the assembly line, and has the most surprising ending of any book I have ever read. I thoroughly recommend it to one and all. Goodnight y'all.

Wilma Petrol and Metal Riplow are forming a neo-punk light metal band at this very moment... I got as far as thinking about Wet3 but didn't remember the guy.

Comebacks: have to nominate Dylan's 'Time Out of Mind' I think. Not that he exactly went away before it came out but he nearly died, that ought to count! And there's a Johnny Cash comeback, isn't there?

A cash comeback is called a refund, non?

Sorry to go back to the top. I would've asked this at the time, but I wasn't there. I never am...

How do you pronounce LOL. Is it "Lol" as in Tolhurst, or as in "lolling against the bar with a Negroni Sbagliato in your hand while the warm Med laps around your feet and the evening sunshine picks out the misguided lemony highlights in your hair"?

Or is it "Ell Owe Ell"?

Also about "offside" (the word not the guy), it might not make sense, but the alternative is the very American image of a ref pointing at a player while shouting "You're OUTTATHEGAME!!!"

Anonymous said...

Offy, back in Europe for only a few weeks and already you want a refund?

James: Chanelle and her friends seem to say Lo', owing to a general dislike of final consonants. Never ell owe ell. Misguided lemony highlights are definitely present at all times.

Comebacks?

byebyebadman said...

Comeback 'album' I think was specified - does it matter what they're coming back from? I assumed years of inertia but if it's near death as in Dylan's case there are lots of examples. Generally when bands get back together it's for a money-spinning trawl down memory lane rather than to record new stuff. I was in the cinema on Sunday and they were plugging the comeback tour of Genesis.

Evergreen by Echo and the Bunnymen was a great comeback album.

There's also a band called the Aliens around at the minute, all three of whom were, at one point or another, in the Beta Band. Recommend 'Astronomy for Dogs' very highly.

what about Bob Dylan?

Anonymous said...

What about him, Guitou? You could possibly say two comebacks if you count the other time with the motorcycle crash, or even more if you think ..
(stoppit Zeph)

Anonymous said...

I take 'comeback' to mean 'didnt record for a while, went out of public conciousness, came back with an admired album', but that seems to make it too tough.

I can't bring myself to accept Take That (snobbish I know, but I loathe Boybandism, though I will make an exception for The Monkees), but it does fit the bill.

American Recordings by Johnny Cash probably best cuts the mustard as a bona fide Comeback album.

Anonymous said...

Songs For Swinging Lovers by Frank Sinatra would be my choice. In fact, any of the albums by the original Comeback Kid which were orchestrated by Nelson Riddle were very worthwhile making.

Frankie Baby's career as a bobbysox teenage hearthrob crooner in the Tommy Dorsey band were well and truly over in 1953. He was 38, a 'has been' and on his uppers, when some of his Italian chums made the producers of From Here To Eternity 'an offer they couldn't refuse'.

Francis Albert won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar and his singing career went into the stratosphere after he was signed up to Capitol Records and paired up with Capitols in-house musical arrangement genius, Nelson Riddle.

Everything that we now associate with Frank Sinatra happened during what was essentially a 'comeback'.

Johnny Cash never really went anywhere from wence he had to make a comeback, he was always a God anyway.

Bands and Rock 'n' Roll though ... hmmmm ... pass.

Anonymous said...

Good call Brooks. You free next Monday night?

Doesnt Wee Small Hours count as the comeback album though?

Anonymous said...

One of the greatest albums of all time, Kind of Blue by Miles Davis is another one.

Miles spent five years in the wilderness of the heroin junkie from the late 40s to the mid 50s after his 'career' as a sideman with people like Charlie Parker dried up.

Miles overcame his addiction with the help of his father and also with the help of probably the greatest boxer of all-time, Sugar Ray Robinson and started again after he met up with Gerry Mulligan. The each had a flat in the same appartment block in New York and from their jams and colaboration the album Birth of the Cool was born.

Kind of Blue came along as a result of two one day sessions on 2nd March and 22nd April 1959 and released on 17th August the same year. It accounts for something like 80% of all of the Jazz albums ever sold ... or so I read somewhere once in music industry trade journal.

Anonymous said...

Yes BD, anything Frank recorded after 1953 counts as a comeback album. In The Wee Small Hours is one of them. I just happen to be a big fan of Nelson Riddle's work. I can't remember who produced 'Hours' but I don't think that it was Mr Riddle, it is acknowledge as probably the first Concept Album.

Anonymous said...

How about the Buena Vista Social Club guys, the eponymous album and then their various solo offerings before they all sadly snuffed it? Got to be quite a comeback there.

Anonymous said...

You could also argue that Private Dancer by Tina Turner or Permanent Vacation by Aerosmith counted as comeback albums but I would give you an robust arguement about whether they counted as 'worthwhile' or not ;o)

lulu!! - are you feeling any less heartbroken yet?

guy - the new moore doc sound a must-see fack-me film!!

they're something SO fab about seeing really good documentary on big screen.

buenavista was spot on, i found, in capturing a climate and a story and portraying the characters with enormous humanity and integrity. judging no-one yet still managing to transmit so much about a bigger picture... really great.

and there's some wim wenders stuff i haven't enjoyed.

i also found michael moore's stance at that oscar ceremony truly admirable. truly, truly good use of a 'live televised event reaching a global audience'.

thinking once again we must find a suitable logo to spread on that corner advert post in time for becks first kick with the US galactix.

how else are chanelle and the girls going to get a political education, right.

re the comebacks, i think of the beta band as a groovy new sound... can't believe some of them are already 'coming back' under another name.

reminds me of the friend who kindly suggested some 20 or so years go that i stick to the sex and drugs and leave the rock 'n roll to those who know about it.

Bernard trumps Nile's work with the Duranies by having produced The Power Station .. John and Andy Taylor fron DD, Robert Palmer and gawd bless him, Chic's drummer Tony Thompson, with Bernard at the helm, thought it would be a good idea to cover T-Rex's 'Get it On'... not the best idea that any of them ever came up with but for me personally it's Bernard being responsible for getting Robert Palmer and DD's Andy Talor into the same room and making Addicted To Love takes the chocolate hob nob.

I would probably never forgive a lesser mortals such diabolical association but for what Bernard has given to me; absolute forgiveness is but a small price to pay.

Bernard Edwards is one of the funkiest bass guitar players you are ever going to hear, his bass playing blew my mind when I was about 13. I played bass guitar almost everyday for the next 15 years.

Disco, US & Uk House and Garage Music, Hip Hop, R&B and even Popular music itself today owe a great deal to these two musical soulmates, their work has been immensely influential.

Addicted To Love, Like A Virgin and Let's Dance are 80s pop anthems but their work together with Chic, Sister Sledge, Diana Ross contain an exceptional number of classic dance tracks; Good Times, Le Freak, I Want Your Love, We Are Family, Thinking Of You, Lost In Music, I'm Coming Out ..er Rapper's Delight and dozens of other sample based club, rap and soul hits.

Chic were awesome and their records still sound spectacular whenever played loudly in any room that happens to be full of people who want to party. Everybody who likes a boogie loves one Chic related dancefloor hit or other, it's just that they might not necessarily be aware of it.

... and all they originally wanted to do was to be like late 70's Roxy Music.

offgrass, yes I'd say so...

Although Brooksie, you could also argue that Bernard was directly responsible for Level 42's Mark King and his giant thumb...

"Le freak" by Chic was number one for ages in France in the late seventies. It was also vastly misunderstood in terms of lyrics.

In French, "Le fric" is slang for money, cash, moolah. And so, naive, non english speaking teenagers were convinced they were singing "Le fric, c'est chic".

No one understood the "Aw, Freak out!" bit either. Everyone thought it was "A-frica!".

Anonymous said...

I love that whole misheard lyrics thing.

For several years I misheard a Bluetones song lyric as

'Your builder costs too much, and you cant see him working anymore'

instead of

'Your pills have cost too much, and you cant feel them working anymore'

Anonymous said...

BD, my favorite lyric of all time was from the Bluetones'Bluetonic "When I am sad and weary/when all my hope is gone/I walk around my house and/ think of you with nothing on..." Genius!

In my house in the 1980's the first line of UB40's Food for Thought was "I like green bananas.." not the more classy "Ivory madonna..".

I remember always having to wait for the Clash albums to come out so you could get the lyrics sleeve and see what the hell Joe Strummer had been howling about on the singles... By which time you'd made up your own words anyway! Altogther..."Tommy's Mum..."!

If we're throwing in soundtracks I'd like an honourable mention for Manhattan by George Gershwin.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1T0lqdxbZU

THE finest opening to a film, IMHO.

Anonymous said...

Yep, there was a B-side to Rockcollection. Laurent Voulzy is still making music today. His schmaltzy, syrupy pop is not exactly my cup of tea but he has a couple of other decent songs to his name.

More famous for his songwriting partnership with Alain Souchon, Voulzy is the composer and arranger and Souchon writes very good, witty lyrics.

Glad you enjoyed that!

Featuring the music of Gershwin I should have said.

Chic was hot, "le Freak c'est chic" also "Good times" are great illustration of the disco fever period.

CE - All Mark King ever really wanted to do was to be was Stanley Clarke. Bernard played bass overhand with the tips of his fingers, he very rarely, if ever, slapped and twanged with his thumb and index finger. Larry Graham invented the slapped bass style, but Stanley Clarke explored it comprehensively and was Mark King's sole inspiration for what he and his chums were later to inflict upon an unsuspecting nation.

Stanley was a member of Weather Report, the band that was formed by the musicians who played on Miles Davis' 'Bitches Brew' album sessions.

three points:
1. child abuse statistics in indigenous communities in NT are actually the lowest in Australia.
2. a recent study in Melbourne, Victoria, established that one in four females (in wider society) had suffered one form of abuse or another - report buried
3. worst practice neglect and now invasive approach in regard to indigenous health and resources almost certain to make things worse

Example: Mutitjule community (where I have lived and worked) of approx 200 - 300 popn had a 2.4million dollar (environmentally unsustainable) police station built - no police staffing it! Meanwhile community have requested a doctor, nurses, dyalisis machine, dietician, swimming pool, soports and recreation professional, etc etc none of it heeded.

Outcome: disgrace and shame and darkening days for Australia...

Moral: shock and awe produces confusion, dismay, anger, self abuse etc..

Final point: indigenous australians have only been reconised as citizens since 1967. little time for an ancient culture to come to terms with grog, drugs, pornography, fast foods, and the other menu items of western society.

Answer: send Chantelle out here quickly as we need a PM who actually cares and has a code of ethics...

it varies from community to community...
some of the more traditionally oriented communities (especially the remote desert communities) where traditional culture is still strong, are a mixture of bemused, aprehensive, and for a long long time now, angry and depressed.

This doesn't mean that they don't have their lives of laughter and fun mixed with strife and struggle like us all, merely that their resources bases are mostly so fragile and dependent upon western handouts for funding, that the capacity for western style responses are extremely limited.

My feeling is that the older people will try and get the army and police onto their side by giving them glimpses of ancient culture like a fish flashing it's colours... in the hope that more understanding will filter out... not that stanner, eliade, and a thousand other anthropologists and writers haven't already made the point...

i actually went to a live performance of koyaanisqatsi at the barbican not SOO long ago (like within the last decade). i'd seen the film several times before but there was something very trippy about the orquestra playing live to the images...

that's a very interesting fact you mention about lower incidence of child abuse in indigenous communities and widespread abuse of women in 'general society'.

Tell ya what, I would not feel so all alone,
Everybody must get stoned.

Anonymous said...

Doc, just calling in ... discussion welcome on the thread, of course. What your government plans to do in the NT is extraordinary and shocking.

I researched this a bit for a TV programme once, I was told that the general public thinks 'child abuse' only means violence or sexual abuse which are relatively rare, but if you include neglect and emotional abuse then the figures are very high in most industrialised societies. But you can make figures prove whatever you want...
